2014 The Unemployed Challenge: We meet again

Season 5

Being the manager of Derby, the board was patient and gave time for the team to develop. But being the manager of Man Utd, it's a totally different story. That's why the board asked us for a title challenge at the beginning of the season. But being the ambitious manager I'm now known for in England, I was more than prepared to take on the challenge handed.

Taking a second look at the squad list, I could see that we certainly did not lack quality or depth in the squad, as the previous managers have made crucial marquee signings. But our squad was full of deadwood from the previous dynasty, with players like Ashley Young wasting their time and our money. Of course, I kept United legends Wayne Rooney and Darren Fletcher around, both of which had plenty of experience, and Rooney in particular often saved us from draws with his excellent play and movement in the hole and in set-piece situations.

Anyway, my first job was to get rid of the deadwood, and withe the money we earned, we brought in Timothy Chandler, a energetic right back who was at Aston Villa. We originally targeted Rafael, who was the brother of Fabio da Silva, our first choice left back, and was sadly sold to Wolfsburg. But Chelsea with Mourinho went absolutely mad in spending, and eventually we lost the bidding war. Chandler was known for his performance at Nuremberg in Germany, especially his runs down the flank when more width is needed, and with his stunning physical condition he made a perfect substitute for Rafael.

The season started smoothly, with us grabbing the first piece of silverware of the season after a 3-0 win over OM in the Euro Super Cup:

And that also put us on a winning streak of 13 games, without conceding a single goal in September as well. While some may consider it an achievement, I found it boring as with the financial support, as well as knowledge and experience in the league, it wasn't really very challenging at all. I started to seek for challenges abroad, with opportunities such as Leverkusen, Ajax, and the French national team come up, yet Ajax decided to keep Benitez, and the other 2 teams did not choose me as. Still, that did not distract me at all, as we went on to become world champions after a 3-0 win over Brazilian giants Sao Paulo:

We also won the FA Cup and Capital One Cup, both with ease despite playing a weaker team. It was also a benefit of having plenty of squad depth, as our players would always be 100% in every single match, giving us an edge over the opponent. Our unbeaten streak which began in August never ended, and eventually we won the league unbeaten, replicating the success of Arsenal back in the 2003-04 season:D

Our final piece of silverware was won perhaps with a little bit of luck, as our Champions Cup Final against Tata Martino's Barcelona ended as a goalless draw even after extra time, as both De Gea and Patricio put on a goalkeeping masterclass. We managed to beat them 4-3 in penalties, and that ends our successful yet somewhat boring season

While this season was perhaps the least entertaining one I've ever had in my career, I certainly gained worldwide reputation for turning Man Utd into world champions and defending our Champions Cup title. This reputation would turn out to be well earned, as it serves me well next season...

Ahh how this brings back memories. You may have successfully motivated me to try this again, it has been so long.

Cracking read Sunny, keep this up pal.

What's the tactic

A 4-2-3-1 shaped 4-1-1-3-1 (you should understand lol), pretty much one of the most common shapes of 4-2-3-1 you see in the world

Balanced

Direct

Normal

Pressing and Offside Trap On (If AssMan asks for man-marking/my defenders have poor teamwork I turn it off) rest off

WBk - CTR - CTR - WBk

BWM---------

---------BBM

InF-------APM-------InF

AdF

The plan B would be putting on a big strong striker up front as a TM instead and playing with one WNG, perhaps going for attacking if we really need a goal

Now at my new club I start with a WNG and an InF instead as we do have 2 good WNGs and both play on the same side of the pitch, so I'd just start with either one anyway.

Thank you all :) halfway through season with Real Madrid already :P

By the way, it's in 2024 so may not bother anyone, but Denmark just offered Brendan Rodgers (managing bottom Prem club Birmingham) that job, so maybe... Just maybe, it's possible!

Update: Just got into Season 7 so I'll start writing up Season 6 tomorrow perhaps

Also applied for Belgium job, I know they're not on the list, but hey an international job won't hurt :P though honestly I doubt that I'll get it...

Does anyone know how to go into the Hall of Fame screen with all the manager rankings and not the Game Centre one? (iOS)

And yes I am rejected once again in favour of a Belgian called Marc Wilmots...perhaps I should try being unemployed next time...?

Don't you have to sign out of the game centre?

I don't know...I've managed to get into the screen a couple of times by luck I suppose...and I guess I had poor connection?

Season 6

Having won every single competition available to us, the board was generous and granted me a big budget for the next season. Of course, they raised their expectations as well, now knowing that I was more than capable at the job. It appeared that signing players for a ridiculous amount of money was the trend now, so I thought I'd join in the bandwagon, and signed Gregory Sissoko, a decent French wide forward for around 22M pounds. We also continued to clear the deadwood, with the likes of Callum McManaman finding their way out.

Still there was a strange vibe coming from within. A calling telling me that I should move on. Uncertain, I decided to stay with Man Utd for the time being, and continued to win the Community Shield in a 4-0 win over Arsenal and the Euro Super Cup after a tight 2-1 win over our rivals Man City

It was after the Euro Super Cup final that I felt that I really needed to move on, for winning awards with Man Utd no longer felt exciting or fun. I've heard of the 3-year rule before, but it appears that I'm barely making it through more than 1 season. Feeling rather frustrated and confused, I decided to resign as the manager of Man Utd...

...and took on another challenge in the city of Madrid:P

36139B24-8778-4E94-AFDA-CFECB8D67F8C_zps

The board and the fans were thrilled to welcome my arrival, for they've heard of my achievements in England and in Europe, calling me their new Mourinho. As I arrived after the transfer window closed in Spain, I had to wait until the winter transfer window to sign Russian box-to-box midfielder Sergey Zhuravlev, the only missing piece of the puzzle. Soon I faced my biggest challenge ever - the El Clasico. It meant even more than the Champions Cup final, for it was more than a simple match, but a cultural symbol. Still, while the squad was still getting used to our new tactics, we managed a decent 1-2 win at Camp Nou

More challenges came along as the season progressed, such as an injury blow for our first choice GK ter Stegen, but we managed to keep our form, despite conceding more goals than usual. Sadly, Madrid really wasn't the new challenge I was looking. Everything was largely the same as my time at Man Utd, but as a professional I promised to stay with Madrid until the end of the season. Still, it wasn't completely boring, as we came back from being 2 goals behind in the Champions Cup final with Arsenal

60291754-F864-4D1D-9337-EF3E506B264F_zps

Other than that, much was the same, and we won everything else available...

Just an idea: next time there's an intl job available, why not save the game, resign from your club and apply. Maybe that's the missing link?

Tried before, doesn't do the trick lol.

Well I'll give it a shot if Sweden sack Mandorlini...seems likely so far but then again they haven't sacked him even after the ECC qualifying stages so his job will probably be safe in the new season

Am actually surprised at how well England are doing lol

Here is something Marc posted in the official forums:

"The jobs available and how interested clubs are in you is down to your reputation (mainly), manager characteristics (partially) and nationality (partially). Please bear in mind resigning from a club will have hurt clubs interest in you slightly as a manager who is likely to walk out on a club without warning isn't in as much demand as one who shows loyalty ...."

Perhaps this plays a major role in this challenge since we keep on resigning/switching clubs...
