Southampton F.C. is not a club that has won many things. Since its creation in 1885, Southampton's greatest achievement has been winning the FA Cup once in 1976, and finishing second place in the English First Division 1983-84 season. Currently the club is a having its best season in almost 30 years, and is battling for a place in the Europa League. Part of the reason for this, is that Southampton has a squad with some very good, young & talented players. In FMH, you can take advantage of Southampton's vast and versatile squad and take the team to unprecedented glory.

Here is a quick view of Southampton's Team Profile-

GK

Fraser Foster

Kelvin Davis

Paulo Gazziniga

Arthur Buroc-On Loan

3 GK's available at the start and 1 on loan. Fraser Foster is your best GK and should always be your first choice. Kelvin Davies (37) is past his prime, but should be a good backup GK in a time of need. However, If you prefer youth over experience, 22 year Paulo Gazziniga is your backup man. If Foster is available have him play, but If he is injured Kelvin & Gazziniga have you covered.

Tips

*If you need to release a player to reduce wages or squad size, Kelvin is a good man to sacrifice. You will be perfectly fine with Foster and Gazziniga, and you can always recall Buroc.

Defenders

Toby Aldeirweireld (DC- Atletico Loan)

Jose Fonte (DC)

Florin Gardos (DC)

Maya Yoshida (DC)

Jordan Turnbull (DC)

Jos Hooiveld (DC- Loaned)

Jason McCarthy (DC)

Jack Stephens (DC)

Mathew Targett (DL)

Nathaniel Clyne (DR)

Ryan Bertnard (DL)

*Recommended positions. Most of these players can be used in other positions.

10 defenders ready for you to manage. In Southampton, You will find defenders with vastly different characteristics, from the leadership & experience of Jose Fonte, to the youth and versatility of Mathew Targett (who can play farther up the field). Sadly your best defender in season 1, Toby Aldeirweireld, is on loan from Atletico. He is truly phenomenal in the back line and will quickly become a vital part of your team's defensive unit. Pair him up with Fonte or Gardos.

In the sides you have Clyne and Bertnard, two very talented wingbacks. The rest of the players add depth to your squad but are relatively young and inexperienced. Us them with caution and always sorround them with older more experience players.

Tips

* It is a good idea to loan some of the younger defenders so that they mature and gain experience. McCarthy and Turnbull are good options.

Midfielders

Morgan Schneiderlin (MC)

Victor Wanyama (MC)

Harrison Reed (MC)

Steven Davis (MC)

James Ward Prowse (MC)

Sam McQueen

Josh Sims

Eljero Elia (Werder Bremen)

Lloyd Isgrove

Omar Rowe

Gaston Ramirez (on Loan)

Dusan Tadic

Jake Hesketh

Filip Djuricic (Loaned from Benfica)

Sadio Mane

Jake Sinclair

16 players to choose from in the midfield and that is not including multiple defenders and strikers who can also play within this area of the field. In other words, the midfield is the strongest part of this team. You will have rising stars such as Morgan Schneiderlin & Victor Wanyama who are two excellent central midfielders. Fancy a wonderkid? You have James Ward Prowse under your wing. Sadio Mane is also a very good AML with tremendous growth potential.

Your two loaned players Elia & Djuricic are good players that add further depth to your squad. Feeling reckless? Recall Gaston Ramirez (AMC) an add even more offensive power to your team. In the midfield you will have absolutely no problem.

Tips

*The strongest point of this team can also become its biggest problem. It would be wise to sell some of these midfielder for extra cash and to have a more compact squad.

Strikers

Graziano Pelle

Pablo Daniel Osvaldo (loaned out)

Jay Rodriguez

Emmanuel Mayuka

Shane Long

Ryan Seager

Sam Gallagher

7 potential strikers. All of them within the same skill level, although Pelle is probably your best option. Jay Rodriguez is also very good and can become the best if given the time to develop. Mayuka also has potential. All of these men will do the job for you but don't expect any wonders.

*With some financial tweaking, Southampton can get up too 20 M in transfer money. Perhaps buying a tried & tested striker is a good idea.

Potential Transfers

The team is largely robust but here are some potential players you can bring in to round off the team: (Prices Listed are aproximately what you will have to pay for them)

GoalKeepers

Rui Patricio/Sporting/7M

If Gazziniga or even Foster don't convince you, Rui Patricio is an excellent option. He is still young for a GK and brings in incredible talent for a very cheap price.

Defenders

Eder Alvarez Balanta/River/7M

The go to defender for your early career needs. He is young, his price point is cheap and he develops into one of the best defenders in the game. He will become your star once Alderweireld finishes his loan. He can also play as DL.

Midfielders

Lucas Romero/Velez/11 M

Depending on what formation you use, you might be in need of Defensive Midfielder. Southampton does not have many men that can naturally play in that position, so Lucas Romero is you best option. He comes at around an 11 M price point, and develops into a monster player. His value also sky rockets so he could serve as a future cash injection to your team. I once sold him for 88 M!

Charles Aranguiz/7 M/International Brazil

You don't need many people in the midfield but Aranguiz is an excellent addition who can cover several positions. His plays in the central midfield and can also play an a AMC or a right winger.

Strikers

Nicklas Helenius/7.5 M/Aston Villa

You have 7 strikers in the team, (one on loan) but none of them are quite like Helenius. This man is an excellent poucher and he has the uncanny ability of appearing in really important games. I have used them across many saves and he has never dissapointed me. If you are not sure about Southampton's current attacking line up then Helenius is your man.

Potential Formations

Trying to take advantage of your midfield and strikers a 4-4-2 & 4-4-2 attacking formations are you best bets.

You have the Midfielders for them and your have many different potential striker combinations up front. Here is a pontential starting XI using 442 attacking

I have now shown you what this team is made of. It is now up to you to take the Challenge. What tactic would suit a team like this best? Who will be your in your XI?

Good Luck & Good Gaming

I agree with Dec. It is a great team guide but you haven't put any of your thoughts on how to improve the team through tactics or transfers.

I think it could do with also including information about the youth talent coming through as they have about 6-7 great young players you did touch on in abit but what about Sims, Reed, Gallagher and Seagar?

Thanks for reading :) Yea I was going to include transfer but honestly In the first season all you would need is maybe a defender or two, and then maybe a striker. My goal with this was to motivate people to use the team, and then have them figure out the rest. I basically gave them the starting 11. Different way of doing the guide....but perhaps I should change the name.

Thanks for the feedback

As I said a guide should be what you could do in the first season so if you need signings then you should advise who to sign and where as well as how to play. This is more like a squad review than a guide though a guide does include a squad review.

Why don't you turn it into a guide then it is the best of both ;)?

Took your advice and added a transfers and formations section :)

I also changed the name back to Team Guide. I hope it's more helpful now.

Southampton are a team I want to play as, hopefully I get to them but I have a few PL teams I like playing as.

They are very good man. This is actually my second time playing them, the first time I did decently. In my second run I truly learned how good they are. I only brought in 3 players and I'm sitting in second place right now. Highly recommended.

Top work, gave me that push to give them a try and it's going great!

That's great. :) Exactly the purpose of this guide, so I'm glad it motivated some people to try it out. Southampton is a surprisingly good team that doesn't really need much tweaking in the first season.

Yea like I mentioned in the guide, Southampton has a quality midfield. Wanayama, Scheinerldin, Prowse, Mane, Tadic...dam lol all of them great players. Maybe not the best in their position in game, but when you add them all up you get a fantastic midfield.

I've used Wanyama and Scheinerldin more than any other midfielders, Wanyama is the best BWM on the game IMO and Scheinerldin is a fantastically balanced BBM.

I sold Wanyama to Liverpool and then used that money to buy Jordan Henderson. I thought it would be cool to swap players. Regret it all season. Wanyama is truly fantastic.
